The following information describes the activities performed by the Sun Lakes Sheriff's Posse in compliance with our Mission Statement.
THE POSSEMEN
Crime Prevention / Assisting Sheriff's Deputies
The primary responsibility of each Posseman is to conduct crime prevention patrols throughout the residential area and business complex within the Sun Lakes community. Our Posseman are also responsible for conducting crime prevention patrols in an area bordered on the west by Interstate I-10, on the east by Gilbert Road, on the south by Hunt Highway and, on the north by Chandler Heights Road. When dispatched, our Posseman provide back-up assistance to the Deputies of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Assignments often include, but are not limited to, the following:
Restricting access to and guarding properties that are considered potential crime scenes; Responding to domestic violence incidents and suicide scenes; providing security during special worship services at our community churches and synagogues; Ensuring perimeter safety for firefighters at fire scenes, at major traffic accident locations and during Emergency Medical Services calls; Assisting with traffic steps; Responding to security system alarms at local banks and businesses as well as at private residences; Providing traffic control at traffic accidents and establishing safe travel corridors to help motorists avoid the accident scene; Maintaining surveillance on locations where illegal activities are suspected; and, conducting welfare and well being checks of Sun Lakes residents.
Supplemental Law Enforcement Activities
The Sun Lakes Sheriff's Posse assists the law enforcement efforts of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office anywhere within Maricopa County and where deemed necessary by the Sheriff. These special assignments include, but are not limited to: crime prevention patrols to secure homes in evacuated fire-zones until residents can safely return; providing crowd control during major events, at funerals for police officers killed in the line of duty; and searching for missing individuals such as the elderly individuals with medical problems, young children and teenagers. And, our Posseman are called upon to provide back-up assistance to the Deputies and Detention Officers of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office during special crime sweep operations.
In addition, the Office of Homeland Security has designated the Sun Lakes Sheriff's Posse as a "first responder" organization. Our Posseman are trained to provide specific law enforcement-related assistance in the event of a national emergency and/or if threats to the Phoenix metropolitan area arise.
